I went to Leicester Mablethorpe children’s Center in 1962 aged 10 after I had lost my dad and my mum had a Nervous breakdown and had to go into a convalescent home.
Thoroughly enjoyed all the new foods I had never tasted before and seeing the sea for the first time ever.
Left school age 15 and went straight into the building trade as a plasterer for 14 years then joined Royal Mail for 34 ending up as a HGV Driver before being medically retired.
I now had the time to think about paying back for how fortunate I have been. Started by being a Borough Councillor for Oadby & Wigston Council in 2011 and subsequently Mayor of the Borough in 2016/17 also becoming a trustee of the charity so as to help to give other children the chance for a free Holliday by the sea. I’m also the Armed Forces Champion of O&W.
So coming from that small poor boy in 1962 to what I’ve managed to achieve with my life so far has got to be from the grassroots of someone’s kindness all those years ago.
