Michael loves working for Leicester Children’s Holidays and especially likes to hear the stories from the deserving children the charity helps, often told to him many years after their return.
He is a proud of his links to Leicestershire history in his role as a liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters. The company holds two charters, one from Oliver Cromwell and the other from Charles II.
Sport has been important in his life and in his younger days he was a keen and talented lawn bowler. He represented Leicestershire and one of his treasured moments was in 1971 when he competed in Los Angeles and made the quarter finals of the singles in the American Open Championships.
His working life was mainly in sales and his happiest days were in the travel industry where he counted P&O, Sealink Ferries (now Stena line) among his employers.
He was at one time military sales manager for Air Europe where he was tasked with increasing sales with the Ministry of Defence, the British Army on the Rhine and NATO.
Michael has lived in Oadby all his life and served his community for 26 years as an elected member of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council. He was council leader for six of them and mayor twice. He served on Leicestershire County Council for 12 years.
He has been married to Pam for 47 years and they have three grown-up children and six grandchildren, all boys.
