We at Leicester Children’s Holidays regret to announce that, for the first time in 75 years, our holidays for children in August 2020 will not now go ahead.
Eighty-five children were all set to enjoy a week at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Norfolk over two weeks. These trips will now be postponed.
The managers of the 26-acre Hilltop centre have decided not to re-open this summer after closing in the March national lockdown. This is due to the difficulties children and staff would have to maintain social distancing in the living quarters.
We support this decision to focus on the safety of the children, staff and volunteers.
It is the first time since 1945 that the charity’s holidays have not gone ahead. During both world wars we were proud to allow our centre in Mablethorpe to be used by troops focused on our country’s coastal defences.
We have investigated alternative holiday centres and even day trips and waited until the last possible moment to make the announcement.
Since January, our staff have been collating the nominations from schools, parents and carers and communicating with families. These families are understanding of the situation and we hope many of the children will be able to go on holiday in summer 2021, if not before.
Our fundraising will continue and we will do our best to increase the number of disadvantaged children from Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we take on holiday next year.
